The Garmin Forerunner 405cx is an improvement over its predecessors as it can monitor how hard you are exercising due to its built in heart rate monitor. It use this information to work out how many calories you have burned during an exercise session. If you were running up hill it would recognise you are working much harder than running down hill so calculates you would use more calories during the first activity. Obviously this will give a much more accurate impression of your workout.
The 405cx also has the ability to set up interval style workouts, which I believe are much more beneficial to you both in terms of losing weight but also in improving overall health and fitness levels. This means when you are outside you don't need a circuit to perform an interval but the forerunner 405cx indicates when an interval starts and stops.
The GPS signal is also much improved and easier to acquire, even near tall trees or buildings.
